London Road Mosque
Cosmur was proud to work with the Ahmadiyya Muslim Association to help them realise their dream of constructing the largest mosque in Western Europe, funded by contributions from the community.
Cosmur Construction was originally engaged on this project to carry out excavation for the new basement. We were then retained to complete all the substructure works and finally approached to construct the entire mosque, which is the largest in Western Europe.
Although a partnering form of contract was not used, the work was carried out under an open-book partnering ethos. The project design was developed as the work proceeded and this was the only practical way of progressing the project to the clients required time scale
The method of cladding the steel-framed dome was determined on site by our carpenters and site team, with the structure finally being clad in stainless steel.
The outside skin of the building is a marble main screen and the internal walls are dry lined with finishes to a very high standard, partitioning-in the prayer halls and public areas.
There is a ladies’ prayer hall on the lower ground floor and a men’s prayer hall on the raised ground floor which is a triple-height room topped by a large dome. There are several ancillary areas including a crèche and TV studios as well as a number of staircases and lifts.
