Chelsea & Westminster Hospital
This was a complex extension project comprising construction of two additional floors of offices built on top of the existing hospital building.
The works involved the construction of a steel frame, laying a steel and cement mezzanine floor and building a curved zinc roof and glazed curtain walling. Extensive scaffolding had to be erected around the building, and due to the location of the hospital there was no storage space at ground floor level and access to the site of the works was by hoist only.
As construction had to be completed without disruption to any of the operations of the hospital, detailed logistical planning was constantly required . The planning was made especially challenging as the works took place above the Assisted Conception Unit where sensitive medical procedures could have been seriously affected by vibrations, noise and dust.
